Common Core Standards Information

There are excellent Parent Handbooks for the new Common Core Curriculum.  These Parent Handbooks are available in both English and Spanish.  We are now using the Common Core Standards for our academic programs at all our five schools in the Corning Union Elementary School District.

Middle School Common Core Standards

Dear Parents and Guardians,
In the 2014/2015 school year, all public schools in the state of California will be assessed under a new set of academic standards.  The new standards are called the Common Core State Standards (http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/).  The standards describe what students should know and be able to do by the end the of each grade level.  In preparation for this change, Corning Union Elementary School District (CUESD) will be moving to these standards this school year.

Over the past year, Corning Union Elementary School District has been hard at work preparing for these changes.  While each subject area will see adjustments to curriculum and learning strategies, middle school mathematics will see some of the biggest change.  For our students, this means that 7th graders will no longer take Pre-Algebra in 7th grade; the course will now be called “7th grade math.”  This will focus on:  ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics and probability.  For 8th graders, they will no longer take Algebra 1; they will now take “8th grade math.”  This will focus on the number system, expressions and equations, functions, geometry, and statistics and probability.  Content in both grade levels has been streamlined in the Common Core allowing teachers and students to go slower and plow deeper into the concepts.  For comparison purposes, the table below shows the progression of course changes for grades 7-12.

CUESD has been working diligently with Corning Union High School and the Tehama County Department of Education to coordinate our programs.  In doing so, it is our desire to provide the smoothest transition possible.  This year, we will be offering our students both 7th and 8th Grade Math the first year of implementation.  Then, in 2014/2015, we hope to offer the advanced 7th and 8th grade courses as well.

We believe that the new Common Core Standards will better prepare our students for the 21st century.  There is a strong emphasis on deeper levels of thinking, communication skills, real world application, and the integration of technology skills.  We as a district embrace the change, but also recognize that change does not come without challenge.  As questions arise, please feel free to contact your child’s school, the district office, or search the many resources available on-line for the Common Core State Standards.  In the coming year our schools will focus on helping the community to understand the changes at open house and back to school nights.

Thank you for your support as we strive to advance our education system for the students of Corning.
